Since April 2013 they have hosted 7 ‘themed’ Cafes these are well attended by residents of local care homes, members of Age UK both from Sheppey and Sittingbourne and local residents in the community
In addition to involving various departments within the secondary school, Local primaries are also involved with children from local primary schools attending and putting on various performances.
The activities started after the school became part of the Sheppey Dementia friendly communities. From those initial steps the team of 6th formers have volunteered their time, given reign to their imaginations and put in a lot of heart and effort into producing a number of the themed café events whilst also studying for their A Levels.
The Dementia Cafes have been a massive success, which can be measured by the numbers of attendees who attend and return again.Local charities and the Alzheimer’s society are also invited and attend to give any information that may be needed.
Each event throughout the year has had a different theme from a Chrisdingle event in December to an Easter egg hunt at Easter, They even managed to encourage donations and contributions from a number of local organisations and businesses.
Whatever the theme they have accompanied a couple of hours of pure fun, sing alongs, and even a bit of pampering and massage from their beautician students.
For a team of 6th formers to have pulled these events together for the school and residents shows such heart, commitment and determination.
