Dementia Inspired is currently working with David Stallion from Trenchers and the management team from The Forum shopping centre in Sittingbourne, to bring the town it’s very first Dementia Café. The Café’s will be run by Ash Roberts from Dementia Inspired and will provide a platform for discussion, education, advice and signposting as well as offering the chance for people to become Dementia Friends by attending free information sessions.
Since working in Dementia Care for many years in Swale, and hearing a lot about Dementia Café’s being a really useful social and intervention tool for carers and people with dementia, I looked around for local café’s that were being held and found none. The closest were either sporadically arranged with little consistency or very little help at all. So, I decided to set up my own café in Trenchers in The Forum in Sittingbourne. This idea came after being involved with Woolly Minded, a knitting group that is held there every Tuesday. David Stallion from Trencher’s was very keen to support my idea and we have run several since.
Our first session was very well attended and they have been consistently attended since. In the last 4 sessions held we have acquired over 30 dementia friends and people attended have been both carers and people with dementia. I have invested in a small advertising campaign with posters that are frequently advertised in several local care homes and public spaces (Phoenix House and Pulse Café) including around the café and the shopping centre also. Sessions are also advertised on our website and through The Forum’s social media. 2 press releases have gone out and we have been featured in the local paper.
Who is involved?
Ash Roberts, David Stallion and Jay from Trenchers, The Forum Management and Marketing Team, the Kent Messenger, photographer John Abnett.
