Dementia friendly Deal took another positive step forwards at the beginning of this year to spread better awareness of dementia within the town through their information sessions, with Direct Cars becoming the first taxi service in Deal to become recognised as dementia friendly. The Deal Centre uses this taxi service for its clients.
The dementia friendly taxi service project aimed to benefit people living with dementia by providing a simple and secure way to travel around; familiar faces and reducing the number of issues they face. For the taxi services these will include improved quality of services and staff that are better able to meet the needs of regular customers. For carers and local service providers there will be clear, secure and established links to use for helping people with dementia to travel to and from home.
Peter Lisle, of Direct Cars and his team of drivers felt that the information session was very worthwhile, expressing that ‘everybody enjoyed the evening and came away with a greater understanding of the disease and its effects on people and their families. We will all have more confidence in dealing with everyday situations and helping people with dementia’.
Dementia Friendly Deal community project aims to make life a little easier for someone who has dementia, whether this is experienced in a shop with the assistant taking more time, with passers by having a little more patience, or accessing services, social activities and family and friends in a secure and simple way. The taxi service project contributes to this, and our vision is that all taxi firms in Deal will become dementia aware, and dementia friendly. We welcome Deal taxi firms to join us to become dementia friendly. We also welcome volunteers who would like to become involved with dementia friendly deal.
