Deal Dementia Awareness day: Celebrate my story

Celebrate my story

On Saturday 21st May, the Deal Centre opened its doors and encouraged the community to come together to become more dementia aware by spending time together and sharing their stories. The idea of celebrating stories was designed to break down the often percieved barriers for people living with dementia and their loved ones, looking past the dementia and re connecting with their personal life histories.

We were fortunate to have the Skylark dementia choir join us, and everyone got involved with the combination of group singing and movement that can have such positive effects for both physical and mental well-being. The Deal Hoodners folk band entertained us further as they encouraged us all to join in with singing along.

Dementia Friends awareness sessions were on offer all day with Leanne Britten, as well as ‘look back’ reminiscence sessions with Di Baggs. Providing dementia support information and a chance to meet one to one was Deal Centre’s outreach worker Gemma Cranthorne…..and on Deal High street Tanya Clover of Clover Care Consultants kindly volunteered to to encourage people to become more dementia aware by running an awareness stand.

Everyone who attended enjoyed getting together, sharing time as well as tea and cake, and a positive vibe was felt throughout the centre.
