My Life Story Books- Gillingham
Kristy from Kissing It Better (KIB) and Mrs Cleall from The Robert Napier School got together and arranged groups of students to visit their local residential home, using their unique talents to connect with the residents. The session with the I.T students was very successful, one of the residents with early stage dementia was overjoyed with being able to see the house she lived in as a child on google maps and was then able to a story about the day she moved into that house and her first day of school. These were memories that she was unable to communicate to staff previously – the power of the images brought those stories to the front of her mind.
This experience inspired the group to use android tablets to work with people to tell their stories in the form of a digital life book. The idea was to enable the older people with early stage dementia to tell their stories and bring their past back to life. The digital life history books enable people to relive and share their stories with others. The app can help re-orientate and focus people living with dementia. Anyone, including care home staff, can pick up the story and better connect with the individual.
