John Portman
John Portman volunteers for the Alzheimer’s Society and has done for about 18 months. John is a passionate volunteer and directly makes a massive contribution to our services by regularly attending our Gillingham Peer Support Group and Carers Information and Support Programme. John has a wonderful way with our clients and treats everyone as an individual. He gets to know everyone and understands the importance of these services.
In addition to our services John also volunteers as a Local Representative for Alzheimer’s Society. This means that he represents Alzheimer’s Society and people living with dementia at a wide number of functions within the Medway area. His influencing skills are second to none and he has built fantastic relationships with local MPS and councillors, among many others.
John has also been an invaluable support for the work that is being done to create a Medway Dementia Action Alliance. John attends the meetings, provides support to Lorraine the chair person and is working to get Rochester high street to become dementia friendly.
John is also passionate about the role of the church in creating dementia friendly communities. John is working with his local church to set up a dementia café, as he felt it was unfair that Rochester did not have one.
John is a highly professional, compassionate and caring volunteer who brings so much to our services and to the people of Medway living with dementia.
